New Head Appointed for Argentina's Statistics Institute

Argentina's Economy Minister announces a change in leadership at Indec amid the critical launch of a new inflation calculation method.

New Head Appointed for Argentina's Statistics Institute

Argentina's Economy Minister, Luis Caputo, announced on Monday that Pedro Linnesse will be the new head of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) following the departure of Marco Lavagna. This appointment comes at a technically crucial moment: the launch of the updated Consumer Price Index (CPI). Caputo stated that the government will maintain the current index until the disinflation process is fully consolidated. He explained that changing the head of Indec while working to bring down inflation would be a mistake, as it would allow critics to claim that the drop in prices was due to the index change, not the government's policies. Lavagna resigned on Monday, creating uncertainty in the agency just days before the first inflation data under the new methodology was to be released. According to the Argentine News Agency, the resignation occurred amid 'internal noise' due to a salary freeze at the institute, which strained relations with the workforce.
